In life, it’s difficult to protect yourself from things you can’t control. However, there are certain times when you can take control. One of those instances is when you’re on the road. This one act, when you’re able to do it, increases the amount of control you hold. For example, fatal drunk-driving accidents usually occur on the weekend. On top of that, the highest number of drunk drivers being on the road between midnight and 3 a.m. Additionally, these numbers only go up during the holiday season…

Many motor vehicle deaths that happen between Christmas and New Years are DUI related. If you’re able to, steer clear of driving during these dangerous times. In turn, this lessens the possibility of being hit by a drunk driver.

Having to be on the Road

Unfortunately, there will be moments when driving during these dangerous times are unavoidable. This can be because you’re coming back from somewhere or working. If this is the case, the first step is identifying someone driving under the influence. Sometimes, it can be pretty obvious.

A big giveaway is the inability to stay in between the lines. For example, if they are drifting too close to other lanes and then jerking the wheel to straighten out. Swerving from side to side may also be a big indication. Other giveaways maybe frequent, abrupt breaking and slow responses to signs and street lights.

Sharing the Road

While we all aim to avoid the roadway during known dangerous times for driving, you can’t always avoid it. If you’re suspicious that a driver near you is under the influence, you may want to distance yourself. If you can, get behind the vehicle. In that case, there’s less of a chance that the driver can crash into your car. It can also give you a good look at the driver’s license plate. Your main goal is to get home safely! Afterwards, you could report the driver’s license plate to the police. 

If you can, it’s best to stay off the road at certain times of the day. However, having to drive during dangerous times may be necessary. If that’s the case, make sure you’re careful of your surroundings. Paying extra attention never hurt anyone! In fact, it could be the thing that saves someone.
